Walahar Dam located in the Walahar Village, Ciampel District, Karawang, West Java Indonesia, is used since 30 November 1925. Built in the Dutch colonial period, which in its development relies on the native labor. So do not be surprised if the architecture is reminiscent of the Dutch (Holland) colonization of the other remaining buildings that still we can find in various regions of Indonesia.
Dam that divides the Citarum River water is enabled to regulate the discharge and the circulation of water in irrigating paddies in Karawang area of ± 87 507 ha.
In addition to irrigate the fields, the dam also serves as the retaining of water when the North Karawang area hit by floods in the rainy season, as the overflow of seawater on the north coast.
Now, after the Dutch colonizers in Indonesia, this dam will not only function as a means of irrigation. But also become an interesting historic sites to be studied and researched, as well as a tourist area for residents both within and from outside Karawang.
As a historical site, Walahar Dam is a witness in a shifting of the river civilizations, especially in Karawang. At least, the Dutch are famous for its excellence in irrigation system pioneered this dam made by maximizing the Citarum River and divide it into a tributary which spread to various areas in Karawang.
Trace on the existing record, in the kingdom, the Citarum River is the main route of trade and transport, while land routes have a higher risk. The presence Karawang port, which now becomes the Square Karawang, as well as relics of the temple in Batujaya, who built the Tarumanegara Kingdom, become very important evidence of the Citarum River long ago.
Then, as the major tourist attractions, Walahar Dam besides the exotic scenery presents also a culinary destination. So do not be surprised if this location becomes one of the favorite places for young people co-wife and the young and old love dining at food stalls that provide food and drinks, especially the location which is arranged facing towards the dam. Fish dishes and grilled fish became the mainstay menu this location.
